José Alegria joined Portugal Telecom in May 2003 where he is currently the Director of Cybersecurity, Privacy and Business Continuity. PT’s Cyber Security Operations Center (SOC) and PT’s CSIRT are under his responsibility.
Previous to Portugal Telecom, he held various positions in the Telco, Banking and IT sectors, like CTO of OniTelecom, founder and Managing Director of BanifServ, Grupo Banif’s IT shared services company, Director of MIS and IT at Grupo BFE and later Group BPI where he led the technical process of merging their three data centers, member of IBM Portugal’s executive committee, responsible for all business hardware platforms and creator in 1991 of the still standing IBM Scientific Prize, one of the most prestigious scientific awards in Portugal, head of EuroAce at Data General, and computer simulation consultant to the Portuguese Armed Forces where he developed an innovative discrete simulation system to help evaluate different options for military carriers after the decolonization process, work that received a letter of commendation from the Portuguese Army Chief of Staff.
He is a founding member of the College of Informatics Engineering of the Portuguese Engineering Council and an original member of its Committee of Admissions and Qualifications.
He graduated in Computer Science in 1977 at FCT/UNL at the top of his class, and between 1979 and 1984 pursued his advanced studies in Computer and Information Science as a Fulbright Visiting Scholar in the US at The Ohio State University. Later, back in Portugal, he was responsible for technological disciplines like compiler construction and object oriented technology.
Technically his current interests are on the application of real-time complex event processing and machine learning to cyber security and operational intelligence.
